Rails 3 tips - Create project with different database(MySQL,PostGresSQL,JDBC,SQL SERVER, etc)

Here are commands to create Rails 3 application with different database

MySQL
rails new app --database=mysql

ORACLE
rails new app --database=oracle

PostgreSQL
rails new app --database=postgresql

SQLite3
rails new app --database=sqlite3

FrontBase
rails new app --database=frontbase

IBM DB
rails new app --database=ibm_db

SQL SERVER
rails new app --database=sqlserver

sqlite3 - SQL commands

I believe you have installed sqlite3 on your machine.Here are some of the basic sqlite3 commands.

Create a database file/Run sqlite3

$ sqlite3 /home/developer/development.sqlite3 SQLite version 3.7.4 Enter ".help" for instructions Enter SQL statements terminated with a ";" sqlite>

This command creates sqlite database file and connect sqlite3 shell.

Help command to get list of all available commands

sqlite> .help .backup ?DB? FILE Backup DB (default "main") to FILE .bail ON|OFF Stop after hitting an error. Default OFF .databases List names and files of attached databases .dump ?TABLE? ... Dump the database in an SQL text format If TABLE specified, only dump tables matching LIKE pattern TABLE. .echo ON|OFF Turn command echo on or off .exit Exit this program .explain ?ON|OFF? Turn output mode suitable for EXPLAIN on or off. DATABASE LIST - To list all database and it's file

sqlite> .databases seq name file --- --------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- 0 main /home/developer/tester.sqlite3 1 temp

SHOW ALL TABLES - To list all tables of database

sqlite> .tables products

SCHEMA - view schema of the table

sqlite> .schema products CREATE TABLE "products" ("id" INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT NOT NULL, "title" varchar(255), "description" text, "image_url" varchar(255), "price" decimal, "created_at" datetime NOT NULL, "updated_at" datetime NOT NULL);

CREATE TABLE - To create a table

sqlite> CREATE TABLE "products" ("id" INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT NOT NULL, "title" varchar(255), "description" text, "image_url" varchar(255), "price" decimal, "created_at" datetime NOT NULL, "updated_at" datetime NOT NULL);

Install and Setup Ruby, Rails 3 on Ubuntu 11.04

To install Rails 3, system needs supporting packages(including ruby,rake,libtool,etc).

1. Install those support packages 

sudo apt-get install ri ruby ruby1.8 ruby-dev rake libruby1.8 zlib1g-dev libssl-dev libreadline5-dev libncurses5-dev build-essential curl git-core git-gui gitk libxml2 libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev bison autoconf libtool

2. Installing rails by RVM(Ruby Version Manager)

For more information about installing RVM, Check it here

sudo rvm install 1.9.2

To make version 1.9.2 as default ruby version(if you have multiple version ruby)

sudo rvm use 1.9.2 --default

3. Install rails gem

sudo gem install rails

4. Install sqlite3

To install this you may need "libsqlite3-dev". so get this from Ubuntu package repo 

sudo apt-get install libsqlite3-dev

Now rails 3 is ready for developing application, In general rails come up with in-build WEBrick webserver. So you can create and deploy sample application on WEBrick.
